December 19, 2012

I have already been to Cairo twice so I knew a few things about the sights and the city but this trip to Cairo was again very exciting due to our great guide Hanan who showed me things I have not seen before. For my girlfriend it was the first time in Egypt & Cairo so did not want to miss seeing the great pyramids with the Sphinx and the National Museum. We were very lucky since we were the only customers and got a private tour with Hanan which started with a very beautiful mosque which I did not see in my previous trips. The mosque was very peaceful although located in the middle of the city. Then we headed to the famous museum and Hanan was very clever and and knew how to avoid the big groups so that she could explain us all the important things about the different items especially from Tutenchamun’s treasue. After a romantic boat trip on the nile (again we were the only customers on the boat so it all felt like a VIP tour through Cairo) and some more interesting stories about the city we had lunch in a restaurant which was especially working for daily groups of tourists. There was a plentiful buffet even with typical Egyptian dessert and not only we enjoyed it but also Hanan. We bought some water bottles for the rest of the day and the prices were absolutely fair. Then we headed to the pyramids and each time when we drove with the minibus to the different locations it was a sight itself observing the traffic what Cairo is also famous for. And although the traffic is very chaotic we never had the feeling that our driver is driving dangerously or getting lost but we always felt safe. I think that is also very important so that you enjoy the trip. At the pyramids we had the choice to go inside one of the three great pyramids or to see a tomb of one of the architects. We decided to see the tomb which was very interesting to see and Hanan explained all the details. In the end we climbed down into one of the small pyramids on the side as well. Hanan even arranged for us a very special camel ride to one of the plateaus closeby from where we had a stunning view to see all pyramids together and we took great pictures from there. At the Sphinx we also visited the small temple next to the Sphinx and bought some souvenirs from the local sales guys. Hanan was perfectly organising everything – she always had all the entrance tickets ready (we have no idea how she got them so quickly all the time), gave us enough time for ourselfes to enjoy the magic moments and explained everything we wanted & needed to know. In between the main sights we also visited a place where papyrus is produced and painted in the traditional way and also a traditional perfume shop. Some people say these are only organised sales events where you are pressured to spend your money but that was definitely not the case. It was very interesting to see how the papyrus is made and I believe this is also part of the culture of the old Egyptians and in the perfume shop we found the perfect gift for a family member back home. All in all it was a really great experience of this stunning place and we both enjoyed the day with Hanan very much. We definitely recommend this to everyone and we wish for Hanan and the driver all the best for the future!
